TurboRad Extender

What It Does

The TurboRad Chrome extension connects Synthesis PACS to TurboRad Reporter. When you open an exam in Synthesis, the extension automatically detects the procedure and sends it to TurboRad, which selects the right report template for you — no copy-pasting required.

Part 1: Installation

Requirements

  • Google Chrome browser
  • Access to both Synthesis PACS and TurboRad Reporter

Steps

  1. Visit the TurboRad Extender's Chrome Store page.
  2. Click Add to Chrome, then Add extension when prompted.
  3. The TurboRad icon will appear in your Chrome toolbar. If you don't see it, click the puzzle piece icon (🧩) in the top-right of Chrome and pin it.

That's it — no configuration needed.

Part 2: How It Works

Once the extension is installed, it runs silently in the background whenever you have both Synthesis and TurboRad open.

The workflow:

  1. You open an exam in Synthesis PACS. The extension reads the procedure name from the report editor (e.g. CT CHEST WITH CONTRAST).
  2. It sends that procedure name to TurboRad Reporter automatically.
  3. TurboRad selects the matching report template. If you've used that procedure before, it uses the template you chose last time. If it's new, you select a template manually — and TurboRad remembers your choice for next time.

Important: The extension only reads from the report editor view in Synthesis. If you're on the image viewer or worklist, it will show "No editable report" until you open an exam.

Informational and Error Messages

TurboRad will show brief notifications to keep you informed:

When things are working:

  • "Mapped Synthesis procedure '[procedure]' to the '[template]' template" — Appears after you manually select a template while an exam is open. TurboRad has saved the association and will auto-select that template for this procedure going forward.

Connection errors (shown as a coloured dot next to the template menu):

  • "No report editor open in Synthesis. Please open an exam." — The extension can see Synthesis but you're on the image viewer or worklist, not a report. Open an exam to clear this.
  • "Synthesis connection lost. Please refresh the Synthesis tab." — The extension lost contact with Synthesis. Refresh the Synthesis tab.
  • "Extension connection lost. Please refresh the page." — TurboRad lost contact with the extension. Refresh the TurboRad tab.
  • "Extension was reloaded — please refresh this page to reconnect." — The extension was updated or reloaded by Chrome. Refresh the TurboRad tab.
  • "Extension error. Please restart your browser." — An internal extension error occurred. Restart Chrome.

If something goes wrong saving a mapping:

  • "Failed to save mapping for '[procedure]' — please try selecting the template again" — TurboRad couldn't record your template choice. Select the template again; if it keeps failing, use "Report a problem" in the extension popup.

Part 3: Using the Extension Popup

Click the TurboRad icon in your Chrome toolbar to open the popup. Here's what you'll see:

Tab Status

Two rows show whether each application is connected:

Green dot

Grey dot

Synthesis PACS

Connected and reading procedures

Not detected — try refreshing the tab

TurboRad Reporter

Connected

Not detected — try refreshing the tab

For Synthesis specifically, the status text also tells you:

  • "Report open" — an exam is open in the report editor and the procedure has been detected
  • "No editable report" — Synthesis is connected, but you're on the image viewer or worklist (no procedure to read)
  • "Please refresh" — the extension can't see the Synthesis tab

Current Synthesis Procedure

Shows the procedure name the extension detected from your current exam. If no exam is open, this will show None.

If the procedure looks wrong — for example, it's showing a previous exam's procedure — you can flag it using the 🚩 button (see below).

🚩 Flag Button

If the procedure shown doesn't match what's actually in Synthesis, click the 🚩 button next to the procedure name. This sends a report to the TurboRad team so they can investigate.

  • The button is only active when both Synthesis and TurboRad are connected.
  • After clicking, you'll see "Flagged. Thank you!" if it was sent successfully.

Report a Problem

Click "Report a problem" to expand a feedback form. Use this to describe any issue you're experiencing — the wrong template was selected, the procedure wasn't detected, etc. Your TurboRad session provides authentication automatically, so the report reaches us with context about what was happening at the time.

Troubleshooting

The procedure isn't being detected

Make sure you're in the report editor in Synthesis — the extension only reads from that view. If you just opened the exam, wait a moment and check the popup again.

TurboRad isn't connecting

Refresh the TurboRad Reporter tab. The extension will reconnect automatically within a few seconds.

Both show grey dots

Refresh both tabs. If that doesn't help, try clicking the TurboRad icon, waiting 5 seconds, and checking again. If the problem persists, use "Report a problem" if TurboRad becomes available, or contact support directly.

The wrong template was selected

You can always change the template manually — and TurboRad will remember your choice for the next exam with that procedure. If you think the procedure was misread by the extension, use the 🚩 flag button to report it.
